As Sarah Feroce, Campus Coordinator of the North Phoenix Campus, observed after our recent events: “It was so exciting to welcome our students and families, make new connections, and reconnect with familiar faces. Building strong relationships between families and school staff is an important part of student success, and events like Meet the Teacher help create a positive foundation for the year ahead.”

This sentiment captures something universal—students of all ages thrive when they feel welcomed, informed, and connected. Meet the Teacher provides a crucial bridge between home and school. It allows families to ask questions, understand classroom expectations and routines, and begin building the trust that makes learning possible.

Special Significance for Students with Autism

For students on the autism spectrum, Meet the Teacher night takes on amplified importance. Preparing a child in advance by giving them a preview of what to expect is among the better-supported practices in autism education. Research shows that social narratives, video modeling, visual supports, and antecedent-based interventions—all tools that can be introduced during a Meet the Teacher event—help reduce anxiety and increase comfort.

When students can “see the thing before the thing,” they arrive on the first day with reduced anxiety and increased confidence. They’ve already walked the classroom, met their teacher’s voice, and begun to build their mental map of the space.

Raquel Yee, Campus Director of our Online Campus, emphasized another critical aspect: “Meet the Teacher is an important opportunity for students and families to begin the school year feeling welcomed, informed, and connected. It allows parents and students to meet the teacher, learn class expectations and routines, become familiar with the online learning platform, ask questions, and ensure they are prepared for the first day of school. Establishing this connection early helps build trust, promotes open communication, and creates a strong foundation for a successful and collaborative school year.”
