Autism Academy Curriculum and Instruction Video is home to some of the leading experts in educating students with autism and providing support to their families. In this brief interactive video with curriculum expert Shannon Mitchell, who is the director of schools for the Autism Academy, she explains the importance of Instructional Strategies and an Individualized Education Plan. Mitchell says, when teaching students with autism, “It is important to make it visual and make it relatable.”

Shannon Mitchell, M.ED, has worked with students with Autism and multiple disabilities for the last 15 years. Her knowledge spans and scope of school and home settings. She earned her undergraduate degree from Arizona State University in Communication with minors in both Business and Child Development. She gained added experience as a Child Development Specialist for Easter Seals of Arizona. Mitchell also worked as an in-home habilitation therapist and trainer. She received her teaching certificate in a Scottsdale Community College Post-Baccalaureate program. Afterward, she worked as a self-contained autism teacher, and conducted trainings for habilitation families. Mitchell’s passion for the autism community comes with sincere compassion, experience, and knowledge. She received her Masters in Special Education and certification as an Autism Support Specialist from Northern Arizona University. She has extensive training and experience in different modalities of teaching including ABA, TEACCH, PBIS, SCERTS, and behavioral/social skills support. For nearly two decades, Mitchell has helped to define best practices for educating children with autism throughout Arizona. She mentors teachers and supports families to help students reach their full potential.
